Referrals to the Student Achievement Center

Jennifer Gonzales writes:

I am seeking your help in identifying students that might benefit from Student Achievement Center services and reinforcing that there are supports available to assist in meeting academic goals. Types of services include assisting with time management, academic skills (reading, writing, math, test taking, etc.), and reinforcing studio practices.

Please assist me by completing and returning the referral form for any student that you feel is not successfully completing your course or you just have a concern about. These can be returned via email or interoffice mail. The form includes a generic letter that can be given to the student and has my contact information and hours. I will also be reaching out to every student that received a D or F at mid term in any class via email. Your assistance through the referral reinforces these efforts and makes the meetings more efficient.

These services are available to all students regardless of current academic standing. It is my intent that these services are seen as a benefit and not a punishment. Please feel free to let all students know about the Student Achievement Center.

Reference for MCA Faculty: MCA Internship Purpose and Guidelines for Students

Purpose
The purpose of internships at MCA is to provide opportunities for students to work in art-related, professional work environments under knowledgeable supervisors while they earn credit toward their BFA degree. Internships are paid or unpaid employment for the duration of one semester or for the summer, and students may earn 3-6 hours of elective credit for their experience.

Eligibility and Evaluation
Students in good standing with a cumulative GPA of 2.60 and at least sixty credits may apply for internships. The credit value for internships is either “0 Credit” (0 credit option is available in the summer only), 3, or 6 hours credit. Registration for all internship electives is required.  A student may not earn more than 3 internship credits in any one semester and not more than 6 toward the BFA or MFA degree. Three-hour credit Internships during the Fall and Spring semesters cost the same as any other three-hour studio elective class. A faculty sponsor oversees each students’ internship experience, on-site supervisors evaluate students’ work at the end of the semester, and faculty sponsors enter grades for the internship elective.

Registration and Requirements
Students must complete the application and registration process outlined at the bottom of this page. Students must register and pay for all internships through the Registrar and all paperwork must be completed by the add deadline to add a course for the next semester.

In the summer only, students may opt to register for a "0 hours credit" internship elective at no cost to the student. The “0 Hours credit” internships are similar the 3- or 6-hour credit internships in that students opting for this kind of internship also will be overseen by a faculty sponsor and evaluated at the end of the summer by their site supervisors. However, students will receive "Pass" or "No Credit" on their transcript, rather than a grade of A, B, C, etc., based on their end of semester evaluation. The "Pass" or "No Credit" grade will not affect the student's GPA, but will be recorded on the transcript.

To complete an internship students must work a minimum of 6 hours a week for 15 weeks or 90 hours per semester, the same hours required for a 3 credit hour class, unless the internship provider requires more time. In the summer, students must work at least 90 hours to complete an internship. Once registered for an internship, students must let the Director of Career Services know if they need to withdraw from the internship or can no longer fulfill the internship requirements.

Currently, Memphis College of Art has almost 100 pre-approved internship sites. The list of internship opportunities in both Fine Arts and Design Arts is available from the Career Services Director. The Director of Career Services oversees the Internship Program and the Dean must approve all internship sites.

Steps to apply and registering for MCA Internships:

Students must complete the following steps and forms to participate an Internship experience:
Prior to the internship semester:
1.  Internship Application (form 1) to be completed and turned in to the Director of Career Services during registration for the fall, spring, or summer semesters and prior to the interview with internship site.

2.  Contact and interview with internship site, which includes submission of resume, portfolio, and other documents required for the site.

3. Internship Agreement/Registration (form 2) — to be completed and signed by the student, Faculty Sponsor, and employer and submitted to the Director of Career Services during registration for the fall, spring, or summer semesters and after the student has been selected for the internship.

4. Registration – Student must register for the internship course with the registrar before the last add date of the semester. Registration and payment for all internship electives is required.

During the internship semester:
5.  Student Internship Evaluation Report — to be completed by the student and turned in to the Director of Career Services.

6.  Supervisor’s Internship Grade Evaluation— to be completed by the Internship Supervisor (Employer) and emailed or faxed to the Director of Career Services at least two days before grading day. The fax number is 901-272-5134.

NEW Internship Link on the MCA Website

The internship list is now online so students and faculty can view them 24/7. Please note that this list will continue to be updated as we update information about the sites and approve new sites.

2)  Information on the Student Contest for 2012 Holiday Bazaar--Please Promote to Students

Attention all students! This is a great opportunity to showcase your work!

MCA's trademark Holiday Bazaar is just around the corner, and we need your help getting ready for it! This year, we will hold a contest to select a piece of a student artwork to possibly represent the Bazaar for the year. The image of the winning entry will represent the Bazaar everywhere – on posters, on advertisements, on the T-bar in front of the park, and perhaps on other merchandise or even in the media! This is a great opportunity to compete to have your work showcased – the work will be featured at the event, which brings more than a thousand visitors to campus each year. The winner not only gets to represent the Bazaar this year, but also will receive a $200 gift card!

The deadline is soon ... so here are the details:

• Work must represent this year's theme -- as literally or as figuratively as you'd like. This year's theme is, "My Favorite Things."

• Work must be submitted on or before Friday, Sept. 14, by 4 p.m. to me, Cara Sievers (my office is in Rust Hall across from the President's office). I will accept work between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m., Monday through Friday.
• You must be able to leave your work in Cara's office until judging is over (approximately a week). You must pick up your work when notified.

• You must fill out a submission form when dropping off your work.

• Work does not have to be 2D, but keep in mind that it will be photographed and portrayed in 2D form.

• By submitting your work – and in the event that you win the competition – you are agreeing to let MCA use your work in any medium and with minimal edits in order to promote the Holiday Bazaar.

• The work will be judged by a local design firm and members of the administration. In the event that no pieces are chosen, MCA reserves the right not to award the prize.

Any questions? Contact Cara Sievers atcsievers@mca.edu. Good luck!

5)  MCA Virtual Bookstore and NEW Deadline for Ordering
MCA Virtual Bookstore will be using a virtual online bookstore.  Students can purchase or rent new and used books.  Students will eventually be able to use future refund money to buy textbooks in advance (no more waiting on refund checks!!). All MCA textbooks will be required to be purchased through the bookstore. Only books that for some reason cannot be offered by Follett can be obtained another way by our teachers.  (This doesn't mean students cannot use other sources for buying books, but we'd like to drive the traffic through this source.)

Everyone must log in and request books or click on “no materials required” for each class/section that you teach.

May 15, 2012 is the deadline for faculty to go online and order their texts.  This early deadline ensures our students better pricing.

If you were unable to attend the April 18 training session and need assistance using the virtual bookstore, please contact Ashley Walker for more information.

6) Number:Inc

Number: the regional journal of the visual arts needs supporter/sponsors through tax deductible donations.

Number: has been published for 25 years and currently provides quarterly coverage of the visual arts in TN, AR, and MS through its free publication. It is run completely by volunteers. Donations support the costs associated with printing and to pay writers. One way to think about donations is that $50 covers a regional update, $100 pays for a review, and $200 pays for a feature or interview.

All donations are tax deductible and sponsors of $25 or more are listed in each issue of Number. To make a donation, send a check to Number: Inc. PO Box 11008, Memphis, TN 38111-1008 or give to Jennifer Gonzales.
